A beautifully presented property steeped in family history
Yamba SPRINGTON
More Images...
In 1846 William Forrest arrived in South Australia from Devon in England. He purchased several properties including land in the Springton area where, in 1858, he established a large dairy, employing milk maids from England, and was one of the first men to deliver cheese to Adelaide. He was also the first to graze Merino sheep in the Springton area.
James Joseph Ross Forrest built the homestead Yamba in 1913 and he continued on with the breeding of Merino sheep with his son, Allan Ross Forrest. According to family hearsay over the years Yamba is the Aboriginal meaning for "home or resting place".
Sheep dog trials were held on the Forrest's property for many years, and the men from each generation have been wool classers, including Allan's son Jim Forrest, the present owner.
Jim, together with his wife Liz, have also carried on with the breeding of Merino sheep and Poll Hereford cattle.
In 1990 they established a very successful rural merchandise and hardware business, Yamba Traders, which was sold in August 2005 to Landmark.
Yamba is uniquely situated with frontage to A Forrests Road just 3kms north west of Springton, 10 kms from Mt. Pleasant and 63kms north of Adelaide and is only an hour's drive from major regions including the Barossa Valley, Adelaide Hills, Murray River and the North Eastern shopping precincts of North Adelaide and Tea Tree Gully.
Yamba comprises 126.2 Hectares or 312 Acres of land on four freehold titles all in the Hundred of Jutland. The district is regarded as being fertile and productive.
The property is situated in a reliable area of approximately 25 inch (625mm) rainfall per annum which falls predominantly during the main growing seasons of autumn, winter and spring.
Yamba is picturesque in appearance, scattered with majestic red gums, and is bounded by roads on all sides of each of the four freehold allotments. The land is gently undulating with fertile grey to brown loam soils over clay. These fertile soils provide prolific winter and spring growth.
Stock and domestic water is supplied by a fully equipped bore, mains water and 130,000 litre on property rainwater storage.
Extensive Landcare works have been undertaken. Dams have been fenced and the property includes a 2ha of wetland.
Fencing is of a very high standard, and a system of laneways facilitates livestock movements.
Improvements include a wonderful older style farm homestead comprising three large bedrooms, well lit sitting room, wide hallway, secure office, formal dining room, country kitchen, big country pantry, bathroom and laundry. 12' high ceilings - double insulated with yellow batts - return verandah, set in picturesque garden and lawn surrounds. An all weather poplar-lined driveway leads past a tennis court and on to ample shedding and livestock facilities including undercover cattle yards, sheep yards, wool shed, triple garage and lock up implement shed with workshop and storeroom.
Yamba has a great deal of historical significance within the region and this is an excellent opportunity to acquire a prime parcel of the north eastern Adelaide Hills.
However, more importantly, the property offers those features which are required for a successful modern primary production business.
The quality of all of the improvements, the wonderful Landcare and wetland areas, the majestic red gums and the clean contour of the land combined with the ease of stock movement with roads bounding on all sides makes this property a most unique offering.
The purchase of Yamba will provide you with a highly productive trophy property and allow you to secure some of the very first land taken up in this region of the Adelaide Hills which has remained in the Forrest family for close to 100 years.
Rarely does such an opportunity present itself.
Your inspection of this outstanding benchmark property is recommended and welcomed.
